Walking Trails through Game Reserves

There are two wonderful game parks on the Dolphin Coast that offer walking trails. These reserves are a short drive away from Colwyn House and offer visitors the chance to experience some of Africa's wildlife while enjoying your beach holiday.

Harold Johnson Nature Reserve. Just 30 kilometers north of Sheffield Beach and Colwyn House, this reserve is spread across the banks of the Tugela River. With coastal bush, steep cliffs and deep gullies this is a great place for a visit. The reserve is home to wildlife such as giraffe, bushbuck, duiker, bushpig, impala, zebra and crocodile.The reserve is well-known for its rich variety of butterflies and birdlife which makes hiking a wonderful experience. The reserve offers a selection of hiking trails of varying distances.

Amatikulu Nature Reserve, about 50km north of Colwyn House, offers the rare opportunity of viewing game feeding on forest dunes overlooking the sea. It runs in a narrow strip along the coast and contains many different habitats - a birdwatcher's paradise. Game includes giraffe, zebra, kudu, impala and reedbuck. It is ideal for day trippers and offers a 4x4 trail and walking trails.
