About Chakas Rock

Chakas Rock is situated just five minutes from Sheffield Beach and Colwyn House. Perched on the rocks above the Indian Ocean on the beautiful Dolphin Coast, this small coastal town has an interesting history.

Chakas Rock, sometimes spelt Shaka's Rock, is named after the legendary Zulu chief Shaka whose Zulu warriors are said to have jumped off the huge rock overlooking the swirling sea to prove their bravery and loyalty.

Other stories detail how Shaka threw his enemies off the rock as deadly punishment. One thing is certain- Shaka selected this area as his favourite seaside resort!

Beaches

Deep sea fishing boats launch from the beach, known as Catfish Beach.

A rugged walking trail from Willard Beach in Ballito to the Rock itself can be followed at low tide through a hole in the cliff.

The Zulu Kingdom

An hour north of Chakas Rock is the Zulu cultural village of Shakaland (phone: 035 460 0912). Enjoy a wonderful cultural experience as you relive the excitement of the days of Shaka, king of the Zulus, in this recreation of his Great Kraal in the Entembeni Hills overlooking the Phobane Lake.

Watch the assegai-wielding warriors, the mysterious sangomas (witch-doctors) and witness the traditional customs including tribal dancing, spear making, ancient Zulu ceremonies and even eat a traditional Zulu meal.
